About Clive's Practice

Registered Member of New Zealand Association of Counselling (NZAC) since 2015

My practice provides a safe, respectful and compassionate environment for you to explore moments or events in your life that can leave you feeling overwhelmed in your thoughts and feelings.  When triggered, it can result in coping-behaviours that work against you rather than for you.
By creating time and space, we work together to find a way to help reduce the harm of life events, with the goal of sustainably increasing your health, happiness and wellbeing.

Finding sustainable healing from...

Trauma and/or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Anxiety

Depression

Sexual Abuse (ACC Lead Provider)

Overwhelming thoughts or feelings

Unhelpful coping behaviours

Unhelpful physical reactions

Grief or loss

Broken relationships

How I can help you:

EMDR Therapy

Working with memory through your eyes...

It might seem incredible that we can heal harm from past events through memory recall and specific eye movements.  Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing, or EMDR, achieves just this.  EMDR offers a way towards resolving traumatic memories in a safe environment and overlays them with positive thoughts and feelings of wellbeing.

People who have used EMDR report an increased sense of wellbeing and energy.  They find they no longer have to expend so much energy containing or managing the trauma or hurt.

Strength-based Counselling

Using an approach that places YOU in the center

Strengths-based counselling works on what you have, rather than what you are missing.  It’s based on the idea that you are naturally motivated and capable in achieving positive changes to your life.  In this approach, I take a more non-directive role, focusing on listening, and exploring with you.

My kaupapa when working together

It’s natural to feel anxious or nervous when thinking about starting counselling.  That’s why at the heart of my approach is being heard.  This, to me, is what counselling is about.  By providing my clients  time, space and acknowledgement, they can begin to feel safe to think and express themselves honestly.  No judgement.

It’s not one size fits all.  I take time with clients to work through which best approach(es) will help them heal and move forward.

My key values that underpin my approach are curiosity, respect and compassion.

Lastly, it’s important to find the counsellor who works best for you.  If I feel a client would suit another approach or counsellor better, then we discuss it.  The key thing is not to give up – it might take a few attempts, but your wellbeing is what is most important.
